The right to happiness seems to be a very modern concept. It often means putting the self before others, and can be the cause of much unhappiness, such as when women or men say they have a right to happiness at the expense of their children.
One should not aim for happiness, but rather contentment. Happiness is not a continuous experience, but changes with different situations. Taking pleasure in other’s happiness is reflected happiness, and that is the best. It’s altruism, as opposed to selfishness.
