Artificial intelligence could one day make us feel awkward

Most of us feel at least a pang of guilt after snacking on a decadent treat between meals, but what if every time you opened your fridge it judged you?

This is exactly the sort of scenario that Alex Gillespie, a psychologist at the London School of Economics, is exploring.  As artificial intelligence becomes more sophisticated and begins to pervade everyday life, he believes we need to begin rethinking our relationship with technology.

Rather than being a tool that we use to work, play and entertain ourselves, machines may at some point begin to form opinions for themselves, explains Gillespie in the video above, recorded at BBC Future’s World-Changing Ideas Summit on 15 November. For him, the big question is how we will react when they do – will we start to react to technology in the same way we do to other people?
