KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) will issue a commemorative coin in honour of humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi, who passed away last week.
Speaking to The Express Tribune on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the central bank said the SBP will issue the commemorative coin at a memorial service at its headquarters on Saturday.
The governor and other senior central bankers will be present on the occasion, he added.
While the spokesperson refused to reveal the denomination of the commemorative coin, he said it would most likely be of a denomination higher than Rs10.
Commemorative coins are typically issued in higher denominations as they are not meant for usual circulation in the economy. Such coins are usually made of copper, zinc and nickel and depict the waxing crescent moon and a five-pointed star.
Last year, the SBP issued a Rs20 commemorative coin to mark the Pakistan-China Year of Friendly Exchange 2015.
Edhi founded and managed Pakistan’s biggest private social welfare organisation for over six decades. He died last week at the age of 88 and was buried on July 9, following a state funeral attended by the President Mamnoon Hussain and army chief General Raheel Sharif.
