Thousands of people held counter demonstration against the UK branch of German far-right wing, anti-Islam political organization “Pegida” when Pegida held a demonstration with a handful of supporters, in Newcastle on February 27 at 11 am on Saturday at the top of the big market in Newcastle city center.
Pegida stands for (German: Patriotische Europäer gegen die Islamisierung des Abendlandes) translated in English as “Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West” is a political group that stands for patriotic Europeans against the Islamisation of the west.
The group has been organizing weekly demonstrations against the Islamisation of the Western world.
Pegida picked Newcastle upon Tyne out of all the cities of UK for their demonstration because they believe they have already following in the city.
Political parties, community leaders, union bosses and the residents have collectively expressed anger and united together for counter demonstration organized by Newcastle unites to give the clear message to this Anti Islam political organization Pegida “you are not welcome in our city”

UK’s Pegida was organized mostly by the members of far-right street movement English Defence League(EDL), which also focuses on an anti-immigrant agenda, and other marginal groups.
Less than 300 people mostly comprised white middle aged men holding union jacks, were turned up in the support of Anti Islamist group Pegida in the UK. Paul Weston Pegida’s key speaker said we are here because nobody else who should be talking about the problems in this country is talking about them. He also said although there are moderate Muslims in the country but Islam is not a religion of peace.

George Galloway MP also came to Newcastle United’s ground to join the anti-Pegida’s demo.
He branded Pegida “right-wing nutters”.
He said “It is absolutely extraordinary that a German organisation sets up in the UK, it’s not as if there is a lack of right-wing nutter organisations here. These organizations always have the same reaction from the all civilized communities “They have got to be opposed, whenever and wherever they are.”
He also said No to this failed fascist German propaganda against Islam while speaking to the Pegida counter demo, Local labour MP Chi Onwurah said, “I wish this wasn’t necessary, what we’d like is this for Pegida to have not picked our great city to march in.”
She also added “But to see people of all cultures and back grounds, from across the political spectrum and cultures including many foot ball fans, turn out really show Newcastle is united against these outsiders”
Further she said it would be “obscene” if a single person had their Muslim belief shaken by Pegida demonstration.
Muslim Councillor Dipu Ahad, the main organizer of this counter demonstration against Pegida said “Pegida is totally rejected by the people of Newcastle, “never again”, he said I am very thank full and proud of all those people who are not Muslims but joined us to fall flat Pegida in Newcastle.
He also said I feel pity for Pegida but most importantly would like to thank them for uniting all the people from all the backgrounds, race and religion.
He also said Islam is not what Pegida is trying to tell the world, we are Muslims and Islam is a peaceful religion.
Pegida is started in October 2014 by Lutz Bachmann with the support of far-right wing politician.
Lutz is the son of a butcher and has a criminal record for just “sixteen burglaries, drunk, driving, dealing cocaine and assault in 1998.
Lutz had been sentenced for several years; he fled to South Africa but was deported back to Germany. When he was fugitive, he opened a night club in Cape Town and he is also the owner of a public relation and advertising company in Dresden Germany. He also used to work as publicist for night clubs.
He also uploaded a picture pretending him Adolph Hitler with a central moustache and similar hair style of him.
