EDMONTON – Five young children were taken to the hospital in Fort McMurray on Sunday after possibly being poisoned.

Officers from Wood Buffalo RCMP received a call shortly after 3 p.m. from firefighters who requested help evacuating the main floor of a four-storey apartment building at 81 Fraser Ave.

Firefighters had been called after an unknown substance was reportedly spilled in one of the units.

A family of nine lived in the suite, including the parents, their five children and two other people.

Police were unable to confirm a report that one of the children had died — a baby less than a year old — or that two others had been flown to Edmonton in critical condition.

Late in the afternoon, some off-duty staff at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre were called in to help treat the victims.

George Cameron, an RCMP spokesman in Fort McMurray, said fire officials had evacuated the entire apartment building, and had sealed off the unit where the incident occurred. On Sunday night they were still trying to determine what the substance was, but suspected it was some sort of pesticide.
