Muslim Scholar, Looking to ‘Speak the Truth,’ Teaches the Holocaust and Islam

NY Times: Early in the summer of 2007, a doctoral student named Mehnaz M. Afridi traveled from her California home to a conference in southern Germany. Her official role was to deliver a paper on anti-Semitism in Egyptian literature, a rather loaded subject for a Muslim scholar. Seventy miles away, she had another appointment, and an even riskier agenda.

After the conference concluded, Ms. Afridi drove to the former concentration camp in Dachau, Germany. As she stood before the dun bricks of a crematorium, she prayed. “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un,” she said in Arabic, meaning, “Surely we belong to God and to him shall we return.”

“I didn’t know that moment would be defining my role,” Dr. Afridi, 44, said a few weeks ago. “I didn’t even realize then that I was at a crossroads. People see the Holocaust and Islam as two separate things, but these stories of faith and catastrophe are not opposites. They are companions.”

    In the Name of Allah The Gracious The Merciful

    الر ۚ تِلْكَ آيَاتُ الْكِتَابِ وَقُرْآنٍ مُبِينٍ {1}
    رُبَمَا يَوَدُّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَوْ كَانُوا مُسْلِمِينَ {2}
    ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوا وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا وَيُلْهِهِمُ الْأَمَلُ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ {3}
    وَمَا أَهْلَكْنَا مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌ مَعْلُومٌ {4}
    مَا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ {5}
    وَقَالُوا يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِي نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ الذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ {6}
    لَوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِالْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ {7}
    مَا نُنَزِّلُ الْمَلَائِكَةَ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوا إِذًا مُنْظَرِينَ {8}
    إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ {9}
    وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ فِي شِيَعِ الْأَوَّلِينَ {10}

    [Shakir 15:1] Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the Book and (of) a Quran that makes (things) clear.
    [Shakir 15:2] Often will those who disbelieve wish that they had been Muslims.
    [Shakir 15:3] Leave them that they may eat and enjoy themselves and (that) hope may beguile them, for they will soon know.
    [Shakir 15:4] And never did We destroy a town but it had a term made known.
    [Shakir 15:5] No people can hasten on their doom nor can they postpone (it).
    [Shakir 15:6] And they say: O you to whom the Reminder has been revealed! you are most surely insane:
    [Shakir 15:7] Why do you not bring to us the angels if you are of the truthful ones?
    [Shakir 15:8] We do not send the angels but with truth, and then they would not be respited.
    [Shakir 15:9] Surely We have revealed the Reminder and We will most surely be its guardian.
    [Shakir 15:10] And certainly We sent (messengers) before you among the nations of yore.
    [Shakir 15:11] And there never came a messenger to them but they mocked him.
    [Shakir 15:12] Thus do We make it to enter into the hearts of the guilty;
    [Shakir 15:13] They do not believe in it, and indeed the example of the former people has already passed.
    [Shakir 15:14] And even if We open to them a gateway of heaven, so that they ascend into it all the while,
    [Shakir 15:15] They would certainly say: Only our eyes have been covered over, rather we are an enchanted people.
    [Shakir 15:16] And certainly We have made strongholds in the heaven and We have made it fair seeming to the beholders.
    [Shakir 15:17] And We guard it against every accursed Shaitan,
    [Shakir 15:18] But he who steals a hearing, so there follows him a visible flame.
    [Shakir 15:19] And the earth– We have spread it forth and made in it firm mountains and caused to grow in it of every suitable thing.
    [Shakir 15:20] And We have made in it means of subsistence for you and for him for whom you are not the suppliers.

    Chapter 5,Verse 2

    يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَوْفُوا بِالْعُقُودِ ۚ أُحِلَّتْ لَكُمْ بَهِيمَةُ الْأَنْعَامِ إِلَّا مَا يُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ غَيْرَ مُحِلِّي الصَّيْدِ وَأَنْتُمْ حُرُمٌ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَحْكُمُ مَا يُرِيدُ {1}
    يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تُحِلُّوا شَعَائِرَ اللَّهِ وَلَا الشَّهْرَ الْحَرَامَ وَلَا الْهَدْيَ وَلَا الْقَلَائِدَ وَلَا آمِّينَ الْبَيْتَ الْحَرَامَ يَبْتَغُونَ فَضْلًا مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ وَرِضْوَانًا ۚ وَإِذَا حَلَلْتُمْ فَاصْطَادُوا ۚ وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ أَنْ صَدُّوكُمْ عَنِ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ أَنْ تَعْتَدُوا ۘ وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ ۖ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ ۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ {2}

    O you who have believed, do not violate the rites of Allah or [the sanctity of] the sacred month or [neglect the marking of] the sacrificial animals and garlanding [them] or [violate the safety of] those coming to the Sacred House seeking bounty from their Lord and [His] approval. But when you come out of ihram, then [you may] hunt. And do not let the hatred of a people for having obstructed you from al-Masjid al-Haram lead you to transgress. And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah ; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
    Hajra
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    Hajra is a female given name. The origin of the name is Arabic, حجره. It is one of the spellings of Hagar, the second wife of Prophet Ibrahim (Abrahim) who bore Ibraham’s first son Ishmael. Although the origins of this name mean sunshine or sunlight, this name is the basis for Hajj, the (annual) pilgrimage to Mecca performed by Muslims.[1]

    This is a common name used in the context of the South Asian Diaspora.

    Hajra (also spelt Hajraw, Hinjra, Hanjrah, Hanjra, Hazra, Hazrah) is a clan of Jats found in the Punjab, Pakistan and Northern Indian state of Punjab.[2] HAJRA[3] is a surname found in the Dusadh community of North India.
    The prophet Ibrahim alayhis ‘salam had vowed to dedicate his life to Allah and be obedient to his wishes. One day, Allah told Ibrahim alayhis ‘salam to take his wife, Hajra Radi Allahu anha, and his young son, Isma’il alayhis ‘salam out into the desert. It was a sizzling hot day and soon they were very hot and tired. Hetold Ibrahim alayhis ‘salam to leave his wife and son in the desert. Ibrahim alayhis ‘salam trusted the word of Allah and so he obeyed.
    Alone in the desert, Hajra Radi Allahu anha and Isma’il alayhis ‘salam looked for shelter. The heat from the desert sun was unbearable. Hajra Radi Allahu anha and Isma’il were very thirsty. Everywhere they looked there was just dusty, dry desert. There was no water to be seen. Hajira Radi Allahu anha had little choice. She had to find someone to give her water. So Hajira Radi Allahu anha left her son and began searching between the desert hills for water. The hours passed and the day got hotter still. Hajra Radi Allahu anha ran between the hills (called Safa and Marwah) seven times. Weeping, Hajra Radi Allahu anha returned to where she had left her baby son. Then something strange happened. Hajra Radi Allahu anha saw water gushing up from the ground around Isma’il’s alayhis ‘salam feet as Isma’il alayhis ‘salam started to knock with his feet on the ground. Within moments there was a deep pool of cool, refreshing water. Overjoyed, Hajra Radi Allahu anha and Isma’il alayhis ‘salam drank from the pool. To their amazement the water continued to gush up from the earth. Hajra Radi Allahu anha praised Allah for the miracle. He had provided for them in their hour of need. The spring became known as Zamzam and continued to flow for hundreds and hundreds of years. Today, pilgrims from all over the world travel there to renew their faith in Allah.

    Hazrat Ibrahim had three wives in total, Sarah, Hajra and Qatoora. Hazrat Sarah gave birth to Hazrat Ishaaq Alai Salaam who was the second son of Ibrahim and when Ishaaq alai salam was born the age of hazrat ismaeel was 14 years and the age of Ibrahim was 100 years.The descendants of Ishaaq are known as Bani Ishaaq and it is to be noted in mind that pakhtuns or pakhtoons are the descendants of Yaqoob alai salam who was the son of this Ishaaq Alai Salam. The second wife Hajra gave birth to Hazrat Ismaeel and the descendants of Ismaeel are known as Bani Ismaeel. Hajra was the daughter of Pharaoh of Egypt who was the resident of Iraq but was settled in Egypt and became the king of Egypt. The third wife Qatoora gave birth to six sons, isbaq, madan, zamran, sokh, madayan and yaqshan and the descendants of Qatoora are known as Bani Qatoora. Then Yaqshan had two sons shiba and dodan or dodal. Hazrat Ibrahim passed some of his life in Iraq and then he went to Syria with his wife Hazrat Sara and his nephew hazrat Loot. Hazrat Ibrahim died at the age of 175 years in Syria. He was buried in the land of Afran who was the son of Sahar in Kinaan. This land was bought by hazrat Ibrahim for this purpose. Similarly hazrat Sara, hazrat Yaqoob, Hazrat Yosuf and Hazrat Ishaaq were also buried here with Hazrat Ibrahim in this land. This place is now known as baithullahm or khalil. And at this place hazrat Isaa Alai Salam were also born.
