Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz died on Thursday, Reuters reports, citing Saudi state television.
Abdullah’s designated successor is Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz, his 79-year-old half-brother.
Reuters reports that King Abdullah had been admitted to a Riyadh hospital in December for medical tests. The royal court announced in January that Abdullah was suffering from pneumonia.
Abdullah came into power in August 2005 after the death of his brother, King Fahd.

The next king will be Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz, state television reported early Friday.
The announcement of his death comes several weeks after the state-run Saudi Press Agency said Abdullah was suffering from pneumonia and had been admitted to the hospital.
King Abdullah became king of the oil-rich nation, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East, in August 2005. But he’d been running Saudi Arabia since 1996, following his half-brother King Fahd’s stroke.
