Pope Francis Does Believe in Demons. Do You?

Pope Francis Thanks Exorcists For Showing ‘Love For Those Possessed’

ROME (RNS) Just in time for Halloween and against an unspecified “steady increase” of demonic possession, Pope Francis thanked exorcists for showing the church’s “love for those possessed” by the devil.

About 300 exorcists from around the world attended a convention in Rome last weekend (Oct. 25-26) and their spokesman later expressed concern about the number of people turning to Satanism and the occult.

In a message sent to the Rev. Francesco Bamonte, who heads the International Association of Exorcists (known as AIE), Francis urged the experts to demonstrate “the church welcomes those suffering from the devil’s work.”

Without citing specific numbers, AIE spokesman Valter Cascioli told Vatican Radio there has been a “steady increase” in the number of people turning to demonic practices and they are left suffering from serious spiritual and psychological damage.

“We are living in a particularly critical time in history, where urgency, superficiality, exasperated individualism, secularization seem to almost dominate our culture,” Cascioli said.

“The battle against evil is becoming more of an emergency. We are calling for major vigilance.”

Last May, priests and lay people gathered in Rome for a six-day course conducted by the Legionaries of Christ and Catholic researchers on how to carry out exorcisms and meet the growing demand for their services.

  1. Zia,
Quite often when you post articles with the mind of ridiculing Christianity, you ignore or do not know the position of your own religion on the same matter. …
Believing in the supernatural permeates every religion. Paranormal is now a discipline in the behavioral sciences. It is believed that Freud’s psychoanalysis was a study in the paranormal. That was why scientists were reluctant to receive it as part of the discipline.
In your belief, it goes down to Muhammad himself. First, he said he was haunted by an unknown violent spirit which tormented him to the point of his contemplating suicide. Then there was the incident when a Jew was accused of having cast a spell on him. He would later say that he had a jinn who was converted to muhammadanism by allah. Which means that before the conversion it was an evil being.
There is widespread believe in witchcraft. Only recently the international press, including TMT, carried the story that the Malaysian government had hired the services of witches to help locate the still missing airliner. Saddam Hussein had employed three old wizards to ‘curse’ President George H.W. Bush and when he lost the re-election bid to Bill Clinton, the loss was attributed to the efficacy of the wizards’ brew.
There are many things which science cannot explain. To dismiss those happenings as arising from ignorance is to be little minded. Religion and science must complement each other so that there is no lacuna.
It is for that reason that the Pope thanked members of the exorcism association for the work they are doing in delivering those possessed by evil spirits. It is foolhardy to think that such things do not exist, because science recognizes them.
Professor Andrew Sims, ex-President of the Royal Society of Psychiatry said:”THE ADVANTAGEOUS EFFECT OF RELIGIOUS BELIEF AND SPIRITUALITY ON MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH IS ONE OF THE BEST KEPT SECRETS IN PSYCHIATRY AND MEDICINE GENERALLY. IF THE FINDINGS OF THE HUGE VOLUME OF RESEARCH ON THIS TOPIC HAD GONE IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION AND IT HAD BEEN FOUND THAT RELIGION DAMAGES YOUR MENTAL HEALTH, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN FRONT PAGE NEWS IN EVERY NEWSPAPER IN THE LAND”.
I watched on an international channel, which specializes on documentaries, a man who testified that his problems ended after he had been exorcised of the evil spirit that had been tormenting him. The exorcism was conducted by a young woman holding just the Bible. The particular channel is widely known for its hostile view of Christianity. Yet it aired the documentary.
Instead of always being sarcastic when it comes to Christianity, scholarship demands that an impartial investigation be conducted to validate or invalidate the claim. That is what science is expected to do.

  2. I very well know the history of medicine, psychology and psychiatry and have been learning this for the last thirty years.

You are right in saying that problems exist in almost all religious groups and I am very critical of the Muslim scholars, who believe in literal Jinns:

Possessed by Jinns: Many Medieval Muslim Scholars Need Exorcism

If you want to genuinely understand the demons allopathic medicine, psychology and psychiatry had to face at the hands of the Catholic Church then you should read, Andrew Dickson White, who was the founding President of Cornell University.

I do know of positive contributions of religions to mental health, but, we should not generalize and accept the catastrophe of Exorcism under that umbrella. Here is a collection of articles about, how religion can help, in mental health:

    Islam and Psychology

  3. Zia,
“-I AM VERY CRITICAL OF THE MUSLIMS SCHOLARS, WHO BELIEVE IN LITERAL JINNS–“.
If ‘jinns’ mean spirit beings, those who believe in them might not be wrong. In many cases those believers do not belong to the fringe of the society. An example is John G. Fuller who has written books on reported encounters people have had with apparitions of the departed.
In ‘The Ghost of Flight 401’, Fuller recounts the experiences of dozens of pilots and cabin crew who encountered the apparitions of the pilot and flight officer who were among the 99 dead on flight 401. This was an Eastern Air Lines flight which crashed in the Everglades 18 miles from Miami international airport at 2342 on December 29, 1972. The apparitions appeared on planes which received replacement parts salvaged from the crashed aircraft.
Some of those encounters took place in the cabin in the presence of passengers. Thereafter, the apparitions disappeared. The airline imposed strict silence on the affair.
During the course of his investigation of the reports, Fuller met a cabin crew who narrowly missed serving on the doomed flight. She had precognition abilities and had premonition of the crash days before it happened. John would later marry Elizabeth who has also written a book ‘My Search For The Ghost of Flight 401”. She became fully clairvoyant. Using that power Elizabeth Fuller communicated with the ghosts and eventually got them exorcised.
Police Departments in the US sometimes engage the services of psychics to help solve murders which science alone could not.
All these sound improbable. But they all happened and still happen in the world’s most scientifically advanced country: the United States of America.
Not everyone who believes in the literal jinns is an eccentric.
