The Muslim community in Australia should not feel targeted by the Federal Government’s proposed expansion of anti-terrorism laws, a Muslim academic says.
The Government is proposing a broadening of the counter-terrorism regime that would include making it an offence to visit certain areas dominated by terrorists, without justification.

We live in a shrunken world and millions of people are on the move; one of our biggest challenges is how we learn to live in proximity to difference – different skin colours, different beliefs and different way of life. According to a study by COMPASS, Muslims born and educated were given the impression of outsiders. The perception among Muslims is that they are unwelcome in Britain is undermining efforts to help them integrate into wider society. Most of them say that they have experienced race discrimination and religious prejudice. Muslims and Islam is promoted a fundamentalist and separatist by the western elite, which have negative impact on community and social cohesion. The number of racist incidents occurring in London Borough of Redbridge’s schools have reached their highest levels since record begin.
Stop this hate against Muslims. It is not them who are extremists or terrorists , but all those who imply they are with the help of media you try bringing others to your side giving false details – twin towers wasn’t Muslim either – that was the Americans – you will not win as Islam Will forever grow and prove it is peaceful through the will of God (Allah SWT)… amen. This is undermining confidence in the Muslim community and increasing Islamophobia. This is another example of the media whipping up hysteria against the Muslim community.
Islamic Extremism is NOT a problem for the Muslim Community. The Government/media/institutions have just patronised us into thinking it is. What makes people think that Muslim communities aren’t doing anything? It’s just that they are going up against an establishment that helps radicalise Muslims with its actions. Let’s be honest, the biggest recruitment drive for radical Islam was George Bush hiring the Black water Mercenaries. Muslims are people, just like you, but with less irrational hatreds, I suspect. The other fact is that most recent terror attempts in this country – mainland – have come from right-wing extremists associated with the BNP.Our politicians won’t stop invading other countries for resources, won’t stop encouraging violence and war and they also won’t stop demonising minorities in order to pass the blame for their own actions onto their victims. It is borderline racism, bi-partisan and disgusting. All so that our major oil companies can keep on returning big dividend payments to these same thugs and warmongers. Islamist terrorists are inspired by a hate-filled ideology – a perversion of the great faith of Islam.
No one has any problem when: Jews keep beards and wear their traditional caps Christian priests and nuns wear their religious outfits Buddhist monks wear orange robes Sikhs keep beards and wear turbans Indian aunties wear Sarees (cross streets and hang out in Wal-Mart) Yeah but if any Muslim male keeps beard or if any Muslim girl wears hijab then everyone has problem. It’s Freedom when you go naked but it’s extremism when you wear hijab – just plain hypocrisy! Looking at the case of France, a major secular nation, I believe it is also not allowing women freedom by not letting her to wear her choice of clothing as it supposedly “clashes with French secular values”.
