Thoughts of a young Muslim – Part 2 – by Mohammed Saboor Nadeem

Some days ago I met a Pakistani “Uncle” in the Bus. So I put my earphones out to salute him, but rather than greet me back he yelled at me and blamed me for listening to music in Ramadan, followed by a pseudo-intellectual lecture on “Islamic norms” (actually he was talking about his traditional understanding), and how he lived a “faultless” childhood – this in 5 minutes.

Sometimes I really think that our old generation is just jealous of the young guys equipped with modern technical devices. Or they just try to demonize all the reasons, which is why they can´t even force strange children to listen to their stories about their life in the rural areas of a country which is located far away from this reality. But why our elderly are caring more about their past then the presence (and future) is another topic.

Here I would like to raise a childish but justifiable question: (Music?) Why not?!

The nature is full of musical sounds, so different melodious sounds exist throughout the universe. Even the Quran tells us about the beautiful voice of the Prophet Hadrat Dawudas (David), which he used to win the hearts of Humans or sometimes to tame wild animals. A short study of the Sunna of the Prophet Muhammadsaw will show that even he insisted on the importance of “entertainment”.

From my point of view not everything in life is just about an easy “good or bad”. There are a lot of various facets between these two extremes. So faith, however, should not determined by these aspects. Or as the Muslim saint Rumi said: don’t care about the cup – enjoy what´s in the cup… The idea of this blog is just to inspire Muslims of this age to rethink. I noticed during my travels throughout the Muslim world, that people created unnecessary topics to needless religious commandments.

Especially some liberal Muslim scholars in European societies are using more and more the vocabulary “Reformist Islam”, but my greatest objection is that if these scholars would really live and work in Muslim communities they would understand that this isn´t Islam, it´s the Muslim people who need to be reformed. The second error, which is very often to be observed, is that the vast majority of Muslims is using a dangerous superficial and incomplete knowledge thus even manipulating others emotionally or just demonizes certain aspects of life.

That should be a raison d’être for young Muslim reformers to stand up and raise their voice in every society of this world and motivate other Muslims to rethink by giving references to the common problems of the community life of Muslims in the Diaspora and also in Muslim countries. After realizing this bold idea Muslims also shall learn to express even difficult and delicate matters. Why we are talking about problems without asking for the reasons? That’s a good way to identify the reasons for the backwardness of Muslims, too. Just talk…! This could promote the concept of tolerance among the Muslims as well.

The Age of Enlightenment in Europe came after the 30 year´s war, after a really dark age of violence and terror. Where Christians murdered members of other Christian confessions, the only reason for that was that everyone thought that he knows the “truth”. Finally the loss of so many human lives led to the stage, that people freed themselves of the “truth claims”. And that’s absolutely the only way to end wars and conflicts in Muslim societies, families or communities.
