Theresa May has been humiliated by David Cameron

Downing Street will say that, on the contrary, Fiona Cunningham had to go because she behaved improperly when she released private correspondence between the Home Secretary and Michael Gove to the Times on Tuesday night, a fact confirmed by the Cabinet Secretary Sir Jeremy Heywood after his investigation into the matter. Gove is guilty of briefing against a senior official in a rival department, something that’s not exactly unheard of in Westminster. Had he used one of his own special advisors to do this, that person would probably now be clearing out his desk, but Gove conducted the briefing himself and the Prime Minister can hardly ask for his resignation for such a minor misdemeanour. May, on the other hand, took the precaution of having an intermediary do her dirty work and the upshot is that the intermediary is now out of a job.
