Many say UN needs to modernise

World leaders are booking their flights to New York for the annual UN General Assembly which begins this week.

But does the UN, founded after the World War II, reflect modern realities?

  1. One has to always realize that there are several sides to the United Nations. On one hand there is the political side with the Security Council bossing the whole world around and the General Assembly permitted to waste their time on useless talk. Then there is the ‘Humanitarian’ side with agencies supposed to assist in a humanitarian way. Both sides need reform. The political side actually I feel does not need reform but it needs to be abolished. To be bossed around by 5 ‘Permanent Members’ dating back to a war that happened before most of us was born is definitely outdated. The Humanitarian Agencies may survive, but need to reform on a competitive business model. The cost of what they produce is too high and the system can be made a lot more efficient.

  2. Definetly the veto system of the 5 permanent UN members needs to be abolished. How can this international organisation be just if its hampered by the interests of 5 nations against the world. No doubt the UN hav done some good work on the humanatarian aspect, but there are rooms for improvements. one of them is to abolish the veto system
