A team of 5 volunteers from Bradford in Yorkshire visited Gambia from 26 April to 7 May 2013 to distribute resources to students and schools in The Gambia. They were led by Mrs Razia Amini, a local fundraiser for Humanity First for many years in Yorkshire. They did a sterling job in the months leading up to the trip in assembling a container load of supplies including books, sports equipment, computers, shoes, uniforms and stationery, which they managed to get donated or provided at heavily discounted prices.
The container went ahead, and then once the team arrived they first went to the HF school in Yundum to offload and sort the supplies, then they visited a number of schools across 6 regional directorates of the country to visit the teachers and students and to hand out the supplies.
The schools supported and the number of beneficiaries at each school are summarised as follows: Mbulum Upper Basic (89), Ndungu Charren Lower Basic (112), Jarumeh Koto Basic (465), Sankulay Kunda Lower Basic (244), Nasir Senior Secondary Basse (896), Sare Luba Lower Basic (510), Wellingara Ba Basic (444), Tahir Senior Secondary Mansa Konko (947), Kamfenda Basic Cycle (260), Latrikuda Sabji Lower Basic (3,886), Masroor Senior Secondary Yundum (1,103), Nusrat Senior Secondary (1,836), Kunta Kinteh Nursery (106), Jai Baldeh’s Nursery (78), Murreh Kunda Basic (215), Dampha Kunda Lower Basic (349), Darsilami Nursery (164).
In total, the team provided resources covering 11,704 students (55% girls, 45% boys) at 17 schools in The Gambia, and the response was one of utter delight among the various recipients. The team had thoroughly enjoyed a never to be forgotten trip, and will be remembered for many years by the thousands of villagers whose lives they touched. As Mrs Amini commented to Humanity First staff on her return “I would like to thank all the Humanity First Team for helping me and making my dream come true with my trip to The Gambia. It is an experience I will never forget.”
