KSA warning: Saudis fighting in Syria will be arrested on return

RIYADH: ARAB NEWS

.Saudis fighting in Syria will be arrested when they return home. The warning has been issued by the Interior Ministry. Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki, the ministry’s spokesman, said: “Involvement in the Syrian crisis is against Saudi laws.”

Al-Turki said authorities will also crack down on Saudis planning to travel to Syria to join the fighting there and that some Saudis who joined the Syrian conflict have already fought for Al-Qaeda outside the Kingdom, AP reported.

Meanwhile, Riad Al-Asaad, commander of the rebel Free Syrian Army, was wounded overnight in a blast that hit his car in eastern Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights watchdog said yesterday.

A government official in Ankara confirmed Asaad had been hurt, saying he had lost a leg in the attack but that he was in “good condition” after being rushed across the Syrian border into Turkey for treatment.

“An explosive device exploded last night near the car carrying Free Syrian Army commander Riad Asaad, who was conducting a tour of the town of Mayadeen in Deir Ezzor province,” Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said.
Asaad, a prominent figure, was one of the first officers to defect from the Syrian state military to the rebel forces, joining their ranks in 2011, not long after the uprising began.

  1. Indeed fighters returning to all of their home countries, not only the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, should be arrested when returning home. – The Swiss law for instance prohibits Swiss from joining foreign armies and they will be arrested when returning home if they do so (for instance the French Foreign Legion). Just because the ‘Free Syrian Army’ and the various militias are not recognized does not mean they should not be arrested. Laws need to be updated to today’s realities.
