5 Mosques Burnt- 20 dead-Deadly riots continue in central Myanmar

Aljazeera: Two days of rioting between Buddhists and Muslims in a central Myanmar town has killed at least 20 people, a legislator said.

The situation in the town of Meikhtila on Friday remained tense and dangerous Win Htein, a local parliamentarian from the opposition National League for Democracy, said.

Al Jazeera’s Wayne Hay, reporting from Bangkok, said the death toll is likely to rise in the coming days.

“Violence was continuing on Friday morning. Small groups of men are roaming around the town, attacking each other and setting fires to buildings as well,” Hay said.

“Many Muslims and Buddhists are leaving the town and some of them, as they are leaving, are saying that security forces … have done nothing to restore order.”

Fires set to Muslim homes continued to burn but angry Buddhist residents and monks prevented authorities from putting out the blazes, he said.

At least five mosques were torched during the violence that started on Wednesday, reportedly triggered by an argument between a Muslim gold shop owner and his Buddhist customers.

A Buddhist monk was among the first killed, inflaming tensions that led a Buddhist mob to rampage through a Muslim neighbourhood.

  1. This post makes a painful reading.O God Almighty, give these feuding people of the same earthly roots and believing in their faiths, religions , a way of life, which actually preach the best of human values to be practiced to create ideal human and humane society of mutual love, respect and dignified life for all with different color and creeds. If such people indulge in burning of each others’ homes and the places of worship are the worst of the human beings. No they are not human beings, they are beasts. If they are human beings, they must not resort to such acts as no faith or religion allows such hatred, abhorent, inhuman self-destruction, self-annahilation brutal acts. The government, the police and the local administration is required to exert its power and authority and take immediate action before the anti-social elements could succeed to do devil work with free hand, without the fear of devil’s punishment. When ever such abhorent acts of brutal killings and burning are indulged in in any part of our global village, the kind heart of every sane and sober member of human society sheds tears and his heart bleeds. Let God may save all souls and let them live a life of their own as required by the Creator of this earth, full of attractive color schemes. Ameen.
