Falkland Islanders vote to stay British

British Prime Minister David Cameron was very pleased with citizens of the Falkland Islands Tuesday. The day before, they said overwhelmingly that they want to remain a part of the family.

Residents of the island off the coast of Argentina voted almost unanimously to remain a British Overseas Territory, an official said late Monday.

“I am delighted with this result,” Cameron said. “It’s the clearest possible result there could be, and the fact is that the Falkland Islands maybe thousands of miles away, but they are British through and through and that is how they want to stay.”

He said that Argentina should respect the will of the islanders and that the UK “will always be there to defend them.”
