A new fusion or another fission? — Yasser Latif Hamdani

Daily Times:

If Pakistan has to survive as a viable and progressive nation state in the modern world it must be organised around one slogan: Pakistan for Pakistanis, where Pakistani means any citizen of Pakistan who ‘may belong to any religion, caste or creed’ or gender or any distinguishing feature whatsoever.

There are two possible futures. Either Pakistanis will realise the perilous odds stacked against them, separate religion from state and build an inclusive, progressive people-friendly state or, there will be fission. There is no third future.

December 21, 2012. The end
of the long count Mayan calendar came and went. While I have never really believed in this sort of thing, the apocalypse and end of the world and what not, I would be lying if I said that I was not disappointed. When you read about the events in Delhi, where a bunch of men gang raped a helpless 23-year-old woman, which ended in a coma for her, or the events in Newtown in Connecticut, one cannot help but wish for an end to our collective misery.
