(CNN) — Syrian warplanes bombarded a densely populated Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus Sunday amid clashes there, opposition activists said.

Airstrikes left at least eight people dead in the Yarmouk camp in the southern part of the capital, the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Another opposition group, the Local Coordination Committees of Syria, said warplanes shelled a school and a mosque.
The assault comes amid clashes over the last 48 hours between rebel fighters and a pro-government Palestinian militia, the observatory said.

Many displaced Palestinians have been living for decades in Yarmouk, a nearly square mile district inside the city boundaries and about five miles from the center of Damascus.

Formed in 1957, the urban enclave is the largest Palestinian refugee community in Syria with more than 148,500 registered refugees, the United Nations said.

Refugees in Yarmouk appear to have been well-integrated into Syrian society, working as doctors, engineers, civil servants, laborers and street vendors.

The United Nations says living conditions in Yarmouk “are far better” than they are in other refugee camps in Syria.

  1. It is surprising that, Mullah’s always quoting Ahmadi’s non muslims but did you see any Ahmadi involved in acts of violence and massacare like that. It is very shameful that they are killing their own brothers and had no shame or sadness. May Allah Almighty give them courage to say wrong always wrong , who ever commits it and whereever.
