Seven Indonesians Named National Heroes

Pesident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono bestowed national hero titles on seven Indonesian citizens during a ceremony at the State Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday. Special honors were also given to humanitarians and artists, including Betawi icon Benyamin Sueb.

The seven new national heros are: Idham Chalid, a former minister and head of Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama; Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah, the first head of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI); Syafrudin Prawiranegara, the first central bank governor; Ki Sarmidi Mangunsarkoro, a key figure in Javanese educational movement Taman Siswa; I Gusti Ketut Puja, the first governor of Bali; Solo Sultan Pakubuwono X, a key figure in Indonesia’s independence war; and Ignatius Joseph Kasimo Hendrowahyono, a Catholic politician.

All seven are deceased, with the honors being accepted by surviving family members.

  1. Looks like the 1st two were rewarded for preaching Ahmadi muslims’s murders & destruction of Ahmadi mosques & property.
