RM1mil fund for ex-cops’ kids

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has announced a RM1mil special fund to help children of retired and former policemen with their education.

The Prime Minister said the money, a contribution from the 1Malaysia Development Bhd Foun­dation, would be channelled to Yayasan Pengaman Malaysia.

“I leave it to the discretion of Pengaman to disburse the money,” he said.

“They will decide on the list of re­­cipients, the criteria, method of disbursement and amount to be given.

“This is an initial amount. If need be, we will add more later,” he said to the cheers of thousands of police pensioners at the Putra World Trade Centre here yesterday.

Present at the event were Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar and Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

Najib also announced the setting up of a special unit to meet the needs of retirees and former policemen, including for housing and agriculture land.

Another announcement made was to award police cooperatives certain projects to ensure they could run smoothly and help its contributors.
