Cable cars to link Makkah’s parking lots with Haram

JEDDAH: Plans are under way to establish 12 cable car systems, linking the parking areas in Kudai, Rusaifa and Taneem with the Grand Mosque in Makkah as part of the government’s efforts to facilitate transportation of pilgrims and reduce traffic congestion.

Adnan Gutub, director of the Center of Research Excellence at Makkah’s Umm Al-Qura University, emphasized the importance of the new cable car system. “It’s a support transport system and not an alternative to the existing one,” he said.

He said the cable car system goes well with Makkah’s geography as the central region of the holy city is surrounded by a number of mountains. “Cable car is an economically viable system and will contribute to lessening the congestion on the road,” he said.

Gutub said his organization was working with the Transport and Crowd Management Center in Toronto University to develop the best cable car transport system for Makkah.

A workshop on the project was held at Umm Al-Qura University on Saturday to discuss the subject in detail with the participation of Saudi and foreign experts.

“There will be two cable car lines from Kudai, four from Rusaifa and six from Taneem,” said Aamir Al-Shalabi of the University of Toronto, adding that studies are under way on two cable car technologies.
