AMMAN – The Islamist movement took to the streets in east Amman on Wednesday evening to protest against the proposed constitutional amendments, saying the changes do not meet the aspirations of Jordanians.
Chanting, ”The people are the source of authorities,” dozens of protesters joined leaders of the Islamic Action Front (IAF), the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, at a rally in Manara after taraweeh (special Ramadan prayers).
According to Islamist leaders, the amendments did not include a fundamental demand by the opposition to form governments based on a parliamentary majority.
IAF Secretary General Hamzah Mansour said the amendments should reflect the aspirations of Jordanians and address core issues such as the mechanisms of forming governments.
He also called for the election of senators and the assurance that the Elections Law achieves social justice and a balance of power within the country.
The protest was held hours after the Muslim Brotherhood movement played down the significance of the suggested constitutional amendments, describing them as insufficient and falling short of Jordanians’ expectations.
“The proposed amendments do not meet the minimum requirements of Jordanians,” the movement said in a statement sent to The Jordan Times.
