Moderate Muslim professor murdered

Moscow A Muslim university professor who criticized radical Islamists was shot dead in Dagestan, officials said Wednesday.

Maksud Sadikov, 48, and his nephew were gunned down in the yard of his home in the regional capital of Makhachkala late Tuesday. “This is not only a murder, it is a challenge to all of our society,” Dagestan’s leader, Magomedsalam Magomedov, said. “We have lost a very well-known man, who had authority in Dagestan.” Regional investigators said they believed the murder was linked to “Sadikov’s professional activity, his active speaking out against the extremist current of Islam.” He had called for moderate religious education to combat Islamist extremism and was an expert on Wahhabism, an extreme form of Islam espoused by insurgents in Russia’s North Caucasus, which he fiercely opposed.
