Osama bin Laden declared war on the U.S. in 1996 because U.S. troops, at the invitation of the Saudi government, were stationed in Saudi Arabia after the First Gulf War. That is how it started. Hardly U.S. imperialism or a plot by the oil companies. So, 9/11 happened with U.S. troops just sitting around the deserts of Saudi Arabia, not “occupying” Afghanistan or Iraq.
