Our domestic problems are mirroring the horror and violence of our foreign policies

By Shayera Dark

Last week, when asked during his daily press briefing about the protests against police violence south of the border, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau paused for twenty-one seconds before responding, “We all watch in horror and consternation at what’s going on in the United States.”

But to those familiar with America’s foreign policy, horror was not what came to mind when President Donald Trump threatened to unleash the wrath of the military on Americans demonstrating the death of George Floyd in police custody. Why would we be shocked? For decades, and under various administrations, the US government has eroded civil liberties in foreign lands by supporting murderous dictators, overthrowing elected leaders and waging sordid wars. It’s no surprise that the same viciousness is manifesting at home. Violence begets violence, after all.

While political pundits and netizens make much ado about the looting and vandalism occurring amid the protests against racism and police brutality, it bears mentioning that those acts register as unseemly because Americans are wrecking businesses on American soil. It also bears mentioning that looting and destruction are quintessentially part of America’s foreign policy towards black, brown and poor countries.

  1. Every one knows that the US military spending is totally out of control. NO AUDIT HAS BEEN DONE successfully !!! Can you imagine that? And as I have seen in Baghdad myself they are wasting material without any relation to cost control. I have literally seen miles and miles of abondened equipment at the airport military base in Baghdad. Equipment just rotting away. And there are books about it … and … no one seems to care from one President to the other. (including Obama).

  2. Very true! They will then be able to afford a lot of reformation back home if they quit their endless wars overseas, Insha’Allah.

This one action will also be good for the world’s environment among many other things.

Everybody will collectively give a HUGE SIGH OF RELIEF!
