A BRITISH coronavirus vaccine could be just weeks away as experts at Oxford University say they’re “80 per cent confident” a new drug will work.
Professor Sarah Gilbert, who is working on a vaccine with a team at the university, is about to begin testing the vaccine, is confident it will work and says it could be ready by September.
The drug is set to be tested in a six-month trial of 510 volunteers in the Thames Valley region with the progress so far being described as “astonishing”.
Currently 79,885 people across the UK have been confirmed to be infected with the virus as the death toll climbs to 9,892.
As the nation faces the reality of living for months with coronavirus restrictions, a successful vaccine holds the key to the end of isolation measures.
Colleague and fellow professor Peter Openshaw, who has advised the Government on vaccines and is vice chair of its virus advisory group Nervtag, is hopeful the vaccine will work and says signs should become clear very soon.
He told The Telegraph: “We could see a signal very quickly. I do earnestly hope that in the next few weeks they get a positive signal.”
