Bangladesh Foreign minister AK Abdul Momen on Sunday said Myanmar averted all international pressures as it got unwavering support from China.

‘There were many country-specific resolutions [at the UN] against Myanmar. Many sanctions were imposed. But the Myanmar government has ignored those as China has always extended support to them,’ he said.

He was speaking at a function organised by Debate for Democracy on Bangladesh Film Development Corporation premise in Dhaka.

The international community should continue to mount pressure for resolving the Rohingya crisis, the minister said, adding China and Russia changed to some extent their position on the issue.

China and India should understand that a serious crisis might be created in future if Rohingya crisis remained unresolved for long, Momen said.

On taking up the issues at the UN, he said many a people believed that things would be resolved automatically if they were taken up at the UN.

‘But we have seen that the UN could not resolve the Iran-Iraq and Syria crises,’ he mentioned.

The Ganges water issues were taken to the UN in 1978, but India had not paid heed to the matter, Momen added.
Debate for Democracy chairman Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury presided over the programme.
