Time to end mandated celibacy for priests

Friday, January 25, 2019

As the Catholic Church continues to struggle with its child sex abuse problem, no one seems willing to consider or even mention one obvious answer: end mandated celibacy for priests.

The Orthodox Church did this ages ago and has not become famous for child abuse. Always the scandal is not the abuse itself but the cover-up. But what about the abuse itself? What if cardinals and bishops did their jobs and stopped hiding abuse? It has to occur before they can hide it, in which case a child has already been damaged.

If Catholics want a church where children are safe, they need a sexually healthy clergy, which means letting those individuals (women as well as men?) who wish to serve the church they love, choose for themselves whether or not to follow a life of celibacy.
