Police in Myanmar have clashed with a mob blocking an aid shipment in Rakhine state while nine people have died in a road accident involving a Red Cross truck in Bangladesh.

Wednesday’s developments hamper urgently needed relief efforts for Rohingya Muslims who have fled violence in Buddhist-majority Myanmar.

A 300-strong Buddhist mob in Rakhine’s capital Sittwe gathered late on Wednesday at a jetty where a boat carrying relief goods was preparing to travel up river to Maungdaw, Reuters news agency said.

The mob forced the ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) to unload the aid from the boat and prevented the vessel from leaving, state-backed Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported on Thursday, quoting Myanmar’s Information Committee.

Police officers arrived as the crowd neared the jetty, while Buddhist monks also tried to calm the mob, but people began to hurl “stones and Molotov [cocktails] at the riot police,” the report said.

Eight people were detained and several police were injured before order was restored.

The ICRC confirmed the incident and said it would continue to try and deliver relief to the area.

“We will carry on, nothing has been put on hold,” Graziella Leite Piccoli, ICRC spokeswoman for Asia, told AFP news agency.

Communal tensions remain high across Rakhine where raids by Rohingya fighters at the end of last month prompted a major army crackdown, driving more than 420,000 people into Bangladesh in what the UN calls a campaign of “ethnic cleansing”.

  1. Always Extremist Muslim who want to create Syariah law in majority Buddhist, Christian, China, Chenyaa/Rusia, Peliphine, London etc. are the root of violence.
Now Rohingya Extremist both sides should be blamed..if there is no a extremist leader there is alway peace.

  2. EXTREMIST LEADER IS DANGEROUS FOR HUMANITY, LIKE NAZI, ISIS, HAMAS, CHEN CHEN, WHITE SUPREMACY, EXTREMIST BUDDHA, ATHEIST, ETC.
As God say in Bible and Quran:
    1. The wise men of knowledge have brought society to prosperity and peace, to Radical clerics, to bring destruction and calamity to their followers and to the people.

    2. The radical clerics (Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddha ) deceive their friends, and dry up their followers into sensual and humiliating lives, seeking ways to harm others, even the word hurt / slander.
    3. And do not incline to those who do wrong / oppressors that cause you to be touched by the fires of hell.QS.11; 113.

    4. And indeed most (from radical intolerant clerics) really want to mislead (others) with their lust without knowledge. Lo! Thy Lord, He is the one who knows the transgressors. QS.6: 119.

    5. And so We have set in every country the greatest villains in order that they may commit the deceit of the land. And they do not deceive but themselves, and they do not realize it. Q.6: (123)

When Muslims are in the Minority they are concerned the right of minority, but when they are in the majority, there is no the Minority’s Right. ( Extremist ideology)

  3. These mobs are no more Buddhist as the terrorist who bomb innocent people are Muslim. Your title is misleading and inflammatory. It is actually the Islamic nation of Bangladesh who is limiting aid to refuges as to make them not stay. https://www.irinnews.org/fr/node/254136 Does not Mohammed command muslims to be charitable to their fellow man?
This problem in Rakine Burma is one of a political nature not a Buddhist one.
