The magazine cover comes as tensions between Germany and Turkey are extremely high. Following an attempted coup on July 15th, skirmishes have broken out between Erdogan’s supporters and critics in Germany’s large Turkish community.
And since Germany declared the massacres of Armenians by Ottoman Turks a “genocide”, the country’s ambassador in Ankara has reportedly been left out in the cold and unable to attend diplomatic meetings. But German satirists were riling up Erdogan even before diplomatic relations got frosty.
After Ankara complained about a German song criticizing the Turkish leader, comedian Jan Böhmermann read a so-called “smear poem” on his public broadcast show, calling Recep Tayyip Erdogan a “goat fucker” who “watches child porn while kicking Kurds”.
