As part of the long running State-backed persecution of Ahmadi Muslims in Pakistan, Ahmadiyya Mosques have long been targeted by religious clerics and official authorities. On Monday 4th May 2015 the Punjab Police once again raided the Ahmadiyya Mosque in Pachnand, District Chakwal, Pakistan and undertook the demolition of its Minarets while desecrating copies of the Holy Quran and other literature.

Four police vans approached and blocked off the streets leading to the Mosque before Policemen and members of the Elite Force set off on a one-and-a-half hour raid to demolish the allegedly illegal Minarets. They carried out a court order issued after mounting pressure from the local religious clerics.

The court order was said to be based on the 1984 anti-Ahmadiyya law prohibiting Minarets on Ahmadiyya Mosques. Although the mosque along with its minarets was constructed in 1962, much before the law was passed and therefore did not fall under the ban; yet the court ruled that the Minarets should be demolished, a decision that is in complete violation of the penal code.

A case was first filed asking for the demolition of the Minarets in 2011 as part of a chain of other hate-crimes spurred by an anti-Ahmadi conference and distribution of provocative literature against local Ahmadi Muslims. Following the conference, Ahmadi Muslim children were expelled from schools, Ahmadiyya Mission House was shot at, hit-lists calling for their murder of Ahmadi Muslims were distributed to general public and a social boycott was urged.

Appeals against the court’s decision to demolish the Minarets were repeatedly turned down and on 30th April 2015the court ruled that the Minarets be demolished within ten days.

Within three days of the decision however, on Sunday 3rd May, Ahmadi Muslims were given the notice that the Minarets would be demolished the very next day on Monday.

On Monday, at the earliest opportunity, Ahmadi Muslim lawyers approached the judge and filed a complaint against the notice saying that it was completely uncalled for whilst the Ahmadi Muslims still had a week to comply with the

decision. The appeal was turned down and while the Ahmadi Muslim delegation was at the court, the contingent of Police and commandos acted on the court notice to demolish the minarets.
