nationalmirroronline.net: In this interview with National Mirror, the Amir, Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Nigeria, Dr. Mashhud Adenrele Fashola speaks on some critical issues that threaten the economic and political stability of the nation. Excerpts;
Why are you bothered about the situation of things?
Truly, many critical issues that threaten the economic and political stability of the nation still persist and are aggravated by new developments. As a religious and humanitarian organization, we are highly concerned about those issues because they threaten the physical, moral and spiritual wellbeing of every citizen, and the continued survival of the nation and the media has a role to play in disseminating the truth and objective broadcast. If the gentlemen of the press manipulate issues for parochial or evil purpose, they will never escape the penalty of God of justice.
What is your stake on the minimum wage controversy and incessant workers’ strikes?
Workers welfare has little to do with nominal minimum wage as long as there is no assurance of price stability or no inflation. All that is required is for workers to demand the assurance of minimum living standards whatever the wage or salary. The minimum living standards require that every worker has access to adequate food and nutrition, minimum standards of shelter, access to safe water and primary health care. These are achievable if the Federal and states cooperate to address agriculture, transportation, housing and healthcare, since the nation has abundant physical and human resources in these respects.
