HOUSTON (FOX 26) –

Blood can kill you, but it can also save your life — and under the carport of an unassuming office building, off one of Houston’s busiest freeways, a small group of ordinary citizens are doing what they can to save lives.

“My name is Tehere Anwar and I am the social service secretary for Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, which is the auxiliary of the Muslim community here in Houston,” said  Anwar. “We are Muslims for Peace, and so we thought this was a good time to show our appreciation for those people who donate blood.”

The organization is holding their fourth annual nationwide Muslims for Life blood drives.

The three-month campaign is aimed to honor the victims of 9/11 and emphasize the Islamic teachings of the sanctity of life. During the previous three campaigns, more than 33,000 pints of blood have been collected to help save more than 100,000 lives.

“This is the most precious thing you can give,” said Majeda Malik, who has donated in the past. “It’s more precious than money or energy or your time.”

Gaby Del Bosque also rolled up her sleeve.

“I want to be a part of helping them make sure that stigma isn’t a part of every Muslim that’s seen,” said Del Bosque. “That’s not everybody.”
