Maulana Abdul Wahid, Fazil, faced with a daunting task in Fiji
By Fiji A WAHID 2sun USA editor Dr. H. Koya
As the first Ahmadiyya Muslim missionary to the Fiji Islands posted in 1962 thousands of miles away from his homeland Pakistan, the late Maualana Abdul Wahid Fazil was faced with a dautng task of building a new jamaat from the scratch.
The late Khalifa of Jamaat Ahmadiyya Hazrat Mirza Mahmood Ahmad had assigned Dr. Matiullah Dard to assist Maulana Andul Wahid sahib on a part time basis with instructions primarilly to serve Fiji community as a high school teacher. In choosing and placing Maulana Abdul Wahid sahib for the Fiji mission, the Khalifa sahib was clearly driven by the prophecy of his late father the Promised Messiah (peace be on him), “ I shall cause thy movement to reach the corners of the earth.”
Mission house on Kings Road, Samabula
New in an island country with limited resources, Maulana Wahid rented a small house on Kings Road in Samabula about 20 minutes from downtown Suva City, Fiji’s capital. This was a convenient location facing the main highway where all major buses stopped by and within reach of shoppong center, local police station and a Muslim school closeby.
This dweling house was converted into a mosque with a small Islamic library. A chalk board posted outside facing the road offerred free Arabic classes that immediattely attracted local parents to send in their kids for evening classes.
Within a few short months a handful members joined the Jamaat that paved the way further progress.
Quran in Fijian language
With a winning personality and great people skills, Maulana Wahid quickly made friends with the Fijians incudng a retired school teacher who was hired to translte the Holy Quran into Fijian language. Maulana Wahid sahib was able to accomplish this huge task in less than two years. The manuscript lay in wait for a review and final proof reading before coming out in print which was initiated some 12 years later in 2006 by the visiting Khalifa Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad.
Great orator and exponent
Maulana Wahid was famous for a his longish expostions in Urdu language that formed the basis of our knowledge. Many followed his oratory style to become great speakers themselves. He always backed arguments with copious references from the books of Hazrat Masih-e-Maoud.
Sir Zafrullah Khan visit Fiji on his watch
One of the greatest events was a visit to Fiji in 1964 by Sir Muhammad Zafrullah Khan – the first foreign minister of Pakistan and retired judge of the International Court of Justice as part of volunteer (waqfe aarzi). He was directed by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II tour Fiji on his way to Australia. This was an appoch making visit as Colonial VIPS, Diplomats and Government official sought to meet Sir Zafrullah Khan and attend all the public events that drew packed audience.
Fiji media gave the visit maximum exposure for the high profile and international popularity Sir Zafrullah Khan enjoyed as a jusrist, politician and sought-after public speaker.
