Germany were crowned world champions for the fourth time as Mario Gotze’s extra-time winner beat Argentina in the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil.

The Germany substitute controlled Andre Schurrle’s cross with his chest before volleying in with seven minutes left.

Both sides wasted chances in normal time, Argentina’s Gonzalo Higuain and Lionel Messi both dragging wide.

Benedikt Howedes hit the Argentine post with a header late in the first half, but Gotze sparked German celebrations.

  1. It is an interesting aspect how spectators always seem to ‘have to’ support one side or the other. This is in a way understandable when one own’s nation is playing, a bit stranger when it is a nation not related to the spectator at all. I cannot explain why the Swiss would (practically) never support Germany. As the Swiss, as a small nation (in spite of their Muslim players!) cannot really hope to win the world cup their one hope usually is that Germany should not win. (Well, Switzerland always wins of course as the FIFA cash goes right to Switzerland all the time). Same as Pakistan: they supplied the footballs to the winners and the losers… Ah well, may be a Psychologist can explain all that. In some commentary I heard that there is a speciality as ‘Sport’s Psychologist’ …

  2. I mean football developed from a religious ritual to a sport event. And what I learned during this World Cup is that the word (football) “fan” is coming from the word fanatic. And when we compare the ceremonies of football matches we can find a lot of similarities to religious ceremonies like singing, chanting, crying, and so on … So maybe this is one of the reasons why they support just one team because of their believe in the spirit of this team

  3. One thing I have to say: it’s a great feeling in Germany one day after “we” are World Champion in Football. Workers, doctors, bus drivers, police officers even bank managers and many more are wearing a shirt of the national team, because every one is proud to be a German… Maybe it’s the first time people here are really proud to be Germans…?! It’s a typical German attitude to be very moderate and foreigners say that the Germans are emotionally very cool and more rational. But today there is no sign for all this. I even heard that neighbors who were fighting for years became friends. People don’t know each other are talking and analyzing the match in busses trains or other public places. Even migrants who was wearing the national teams shirt today are telling that it’s the first time they felt at home here because everyone is talking with them as we were one nation… I have a dream…!
