…………. Beauty is what attracts and defines at an immediate level, even that of lifeless objects. A beautiful car, a beautiful building, a beautiful lake, a beautiful full moon, a beautiful eclipse, the beautiful rising sun et al are terms we use to convey the appeal of these entities. A piece of poetry or prose can also be beautiful, as much as a beautiful punch line, expression or an oratorical piece. We are enthralled by a beautiful stage show, whether it is of dance, drama or instrumental music. We are often swept sway by the sheer beauty of Nature: the night sky abundant with stars, a verdant or the sight of a flock of snow white cranes fishing in the virgin waters of a lake.

But taking the concept of beauty beyond material objects and entities further, we discover the appeal of truth and righteousness. The Upanishadic verse ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ describes this aptly. Truth is beneficent and is beautiful. This sublime understanding of truth being the prime instrument of human welfare and ‘beautiful’ at the same time brings out the subtle concept of beauty. Truth is really the greatest religion and the vehicle of human deliverance. It is the core liberator and emancipator of man. Adherence to truth in action and conduct gives peace and happiness. What is natural and in tune with the systems of Nature is based on truth and carries appeal. It is beautiful. It percolates the layers of sensory perception and stirs the soul.
