A Birmingham Islamic TV channel has been fined £85,000 after a controversial presenter said it was a duty for Muslims to murder anyone who insults the Prophet Mohammad.
Broadcasting regulator Ofcom said the statement aired live on Noor TV last May could have radicalised its young viewers and incited them to commit acts of violence.
Satellite channel Noor TV boasts that its multi-lingual broadcasts from a studio in Victoria Road, Aston, specifically target young British Muslims.
The station says its mission is to “present a balanced, moderate and true face of Islam to both Muslims and non-Muslim communities across the globe”.
But on its Paigham-e-Mustafa – it means Message from Mustafa – programme, presenter Allama Muhammad Farooq Nizami told its Muslim viewers that it was their duty to murder anyone who insulted Islam’s prophet Mohammed.
The shocking advice was prompted by a caller who asked in Urdu what punishment was due for anyone showing disrespect to Islam.
Sitting alone in the studio, Nizami looked straight into the camera and replied:
One has to choose one’s own method. Our way is the peaceful way but when someone crosses the limits, faith-based emotions are instigated.
The mission of our life is to protect the sanctity of our beloved Lord.
May Allah accept us wherever there is a need to kill a blasphemer.
We are ready, and should be ready at all times, to kill a blasphemer.
Several viewers immediately contacted Ofcom to complain.
In addition to imposing a fine, Ofcom said the comments were ‘likely to encourage or incite the commission of crime or to lead to disorder.’

Examining Both Sides: Freedom of Speech and Its Limitations?

I believe that exceptions to free speech that the European Union has claimed for herself, should be allowed to each country or religion, until we can have truly a Global Village and then we will need a universal understanding of these issues.
European Convention of Human Rights
I think many of the exceptions for freedom of speech are tackled in the Article 10 of European Convention of Human Rights.
This Article provides the right to freedom of expression, subject to certain restrictions that are “in accordance with law” and “necessary in a democratic society”. This right includes the freedom to hold opinions, and to receive and impart information and ideas, but allows restrictions for:
We would certainly need the best legal minds humanity can offer to give concrete and legalistic details of the above exceptions that may be acceptable to people of all faiths, ethnicities and nationalities.
If the Supreme Court Justices do not come to our rescue, may be a good and an accomplished writer can help out with a best selling book. But, the key is to at least, win the moderates, in all the established religions of the world and among the agnostics and atheists.
@ OP:
controversial presenter said it was a duty for Muslims to murder anyone who insults the Prophet Mohammad.
———————————
That was a silly and false (anti-Islamic) remark of the presenter. There is no mention in the Quran of killing a blasphemer. Hadith alone cannot decide such matters of Capital punishment.
It is good that some one has been taken to task for spreading wrong information and inciting young Muslims to violence. The bigots need to learn some lessons.
Al Hamdu Lillah.
The story seems to be accurate but reading from the source, i.e. Birmingham Mail, it appears to be from last year.
Ghulam,
In reaction to the film ‘THE INNOCENCE OF A MUSLIM’, Barack Obama said that there was no room in America for anyone ‘WHO INSULTS THE PROPHET’.
Having no room can be interpreted to mean ‘eliminating’ or ‘killing’ an offender. I do not recall you condemning Obama for what he said which can also have the same effect as the venom from that Birmingham radio station.
Muhammadanism is not complete without the hadiths, for they compliment the quran. What is not found in the quran is equally effective or forceful if contained in the hadiths. As the traditions of Muhammad, the hadiths are held to have been divinely inspired.
However, when it is convenient, the muhammadan distances himself from any provision in the hadith which highlights the creed’s inhuman nature.
The fact cannot be refuted that Muhammad ordered the killing of those who spoke against him. Speaking against is blasphemy or as Obama put it, “insulting the prophet”.
Zia’s suggestion that legal minds should determine the issues in the European human rights is most welcome. But I go beyond that and call on the United Nations to embark on that particularly as it concerns the protection of ‘the reputation and right of others’ because people in certain quarters think they have the sole right to malign others and their beliefs with impunity. That way, it will become more universal than only European. It will then be obvious to all, that insulting or persecuting others for their belief is a crime against humanity.
The radio presenter was not just speaking his mind. He expressed that of a class. It is an order which will be carried out while the British public continue their addiction to stupidity as strangers dictate to them what to say or do in their own country in the name of liberalism.
CORRECTION
Change ‘radio’ to ‘tv’ station in the above post.
Prophet Muhammad did not order killing of those who criticized him.
He actually said the funeral prayer of Abdullah bin Ubbay, who called him the “meanest of all.”
If we look at the big picture that just with a total casualties of approximately 900-1000, on both sides, he transformed the whole country and in time, whole of humanity, speaks volumes about his wisdom and tolerance:
Muhammad: the Light for the Dark Ages of Europe!
What President Obama said in his speech in the United Nations:
Namelee only a mind blessed with your prejudices can misrepresent that. All Obama is saying is that future should not belong to people like you, who use a medieval term of “Muhammadanism,” for Islam. He is not promoting any violence against you and neither are we.
namelee, Barak Obama sahib said that there was no room in America for anyone ‘WHO INSULTS THE PROPHET’.
It only means such a person is not a good person. Such a person is not welcome in America.
You are again grinding your stone using Hadith. Hadith is very useful if in accord with the teachings of the Quran. It is as good and more reliable than the biography of Jesus i.e. your Bible NT.
I admit there may be some Hadith which are not authentic or they are being misunderstood, misinterpreted. But that is the case with the Bible too where everything is turned upside down against the original teachings of Jesus a.s.
The Church has found some easy excuses for every bad thing against the teachings of Jesus a.s.
Jesus never indulged in adultery. He was not against marriage. He did not touch any pork. He did not abandon Sabath. He did not abandon the law. But look at what you are doing today. You have made Jesus into a God Almighty!!!
So please forget Obama and get on with the actual life and living of Jesus a.s. the way he lived.
I cannot reply to all your points. But I say that every nation, including Christians, have indulged in serious politics, occupying others lands. Now those who were oppressed have come back to western countries to seek some peace. It is better to let them live in peace if they do not become enemies.
Wassalam.
Nemlee needs an IQ test.
There is no religion called muhammadanism.
Mr Obama does not a NOBODY to interpret his statement.
