(HLNtv.com) — “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson is ruffling feathers again, this time for comments he made years ago about how girls should marry when they’re still teenagers.
“They got to where they’re getting hard to find, mainly because these boys are waiting ’til they get to be about 20 years old before they marry ’em,” Robertson says in a video clip that resurfaced Monday. “Look, you wait ’til they get to be 20 years old, the only picking that’s going to take place is your pocket. You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16. They’ll pick your ducks.”
In the video, Robertson is recounting an anecdote at a speaking engagement. He describes the story as “river rat counseling” he was giving to a “boy” of unknown age and — referring specifically to marrying teenage girls — also advises the crowd to “check with Mom and Dad about that, of course.” Robertson is four years older than his wife, Kay, whom he married when she was 16 years old, according to A&E’s website.

Teachings of most religions are similar on moral issues. Islam, however, does not advocate teen marriages. It only sets a limit that they cannot marry before puberty.
There are many factors that are prohibitive to teen marriages in today’s age. Education is foremost and employment comes next. Especially communities that want to aim higher need to focus on good educational background for their boys and girls.
Unfortunately, in America, religious minded conservative people tend to think of education, especially in scientific fields, as something not worthy enough…they are particularly not keen on nurturing women’s intellects. As, Muslims, thankfully we know different…since according to the Holy Prophet (pbuh) it is the duty of every Muslim man and woman to acquire knowledge.
Age of marriage among Muslims cannot differ from the age of ‘sexual activity’. In Europe the age of ‘sexual activity’ starts ON THE AVERAGE around 16. Consequently age of marriage should be similar. Only if the ‘age of sexual activity’ can be delayed can the marriage age also be delayed. Europeans and Americans do not seem to care about this difference, but Muslims do.
Let us remember that it is natural for teenagers to start taking an interest in the opposite sex but having a crush on another teenager is very different from bring rushed into marriage, for life, with an older man, often a stranger. Teenagers rarely have the maturity to make such a life-changing decision, let alone to have this situation forced on them. It has been common in the Muslim world to marry off girls far too young to cope with marriage and especially motherhood. As for the disgusting pedophiles who are offered little girls if 9 or less as brides, words fail me and it is incomprehensible how parents can do this to their child. Maybe it is a sign of the low status of girls in Muslim societies that value boys more. The religion is obsessed with sex and what men are allowed to do to women. Why would you want girls to marry at 15? I suggest it is the fear that they might get pregnant or make their own choice of partner -what the neighbours think matters more the. The happiness of your daughters! How do I know this? Because it was once not too different in the west!
