Nairobi attack: Somali Muslim pictured braving bullets to rescue girl, 4, and her family revealed for first time

Abdul Haji was pictured reaching out for frightened four-year-old girl running for her life

These dramatic pictures show the incredible moment a Somali Muslim braved grenades and bullets to rescue a mother and her three daughters trapped inside the Westgate shopping mall.

Katherine Walton was trapped with her children beneath a table as al Shabaab terrorists tortured and killed shoppers inside the shopping centre.

But, as captured in these now iconic pictures, Abdul Haji, the son of a former Kenyan security minister, rescued the terrified family.

In one picture, he can be seen reaching for Mrs Walton’s four-year-old daughter Portia as she runs in fear of her life.

As the rest of the family followed, Mr Haji fired back at the terrorists using his handgun.

Mother of five Mrs Walton, 38, who moved to Africa with her husband Phillip two years ago, told the Daily Telegraph: ‘We were just going to meet my two older boys in the supermarket when we heard an explosion.

“I grabbed the girls and started running. A woman pulled us behind a promotional table opposite. I could see the bullets hitting above the shops and hear the screaming all around us.’

The horrified family were trapped for hours beneath the table. They could hear the screams as the militants launched their killing spree.

But eventually Mr Haji emerged and attempted to coax the women towards him. Initially, they were too scared to move as a group but brave four-year-old Portia eventually ran towards Mr Haji.
