Times of India: NEW DELHI: India’s leading Islamic seminary Darul Uloom has issued a fatwa, saying “photography is unlawful and a sin”, even though Saudi Arabia allows photographers inside the holy city of Mecca and live telecast of ‘namaz’ is beamed on Islamic channels across the world.
Mufti Abdul Qasim Nomani, Mohtamim (Vice-Chancellor) of Darul Uloom Deoband, said on the phone, “Photography is un-Islamic. Muslims are not allowed to get their photos clicked unless it is for an identity card or for making a passport.”
He said Islam does not permit video-taping of marriages or clicking of pictures to save as mementos for future generations.
When pointed out that Saudi Arabia, which follows the Wahabi schoolthat aspires to return to the earliest fundamental sources of Islam, allows photography in the holiest of Islamic cities Mecca and beams live coverage through the year, Nomani said, “Let them do it. We do not allow it. Not everything they do is correct.”
Nomani agreed with the fatwa — a religious edict issued by Darul Ifta in Deoband — regarding a query from an engineering graduate saying he was passionate about photography and wanted to pursue it as a career.

We do not see the wisdom of this Fatwa and invite all Muslims to moderation and rationality.

Well now at least our deobandi muslim brothers should follow the fatwa and stop appearing on Television and newspapers if they are truly sincere to thier faith.
May peace & blessings Upon all his Creations. Since couple of years we have seen some Fatwas been Issued on certain topics, which has no effect on Society . Looks like some people wants to be in limelight of media.And because of this almost every sincere and educated Muslim feel hurt. If u see today’s World, Specially India, Specifically Indian Muslims, They been targeted from Hindu & Muslims fanatics. The sufferers are common Muslims. Just yesterday under the shadow of Deoband 41 innocents got killed as riots took placed . There is no concern about this tragedy, but they issue Fatwa about Photography? Does it make any sense ? Photography is a scientific tool , it can be used for good and bad purpose. Even talking about this is foolishness. Let me ask this Mullah , Is Poverty amongst Muslims been eradicated ? Is Every Sister daughter & Mother is safe in Muslim area? In neighbouring area of Deoband tonnes of Muslims live below poverty lane. Even some sisters unwillingly commit some acts just for few Rupees to feed their Children. Ignoring all ground realities, if somebody talk about issues which are not at all important, Than they are Insane creatures. Rather establishing Electronic repair Centers (Photography equipments repairs) for Community employment , They are shunning all the Opportunities on Innocent Muslims? They are not Practical people. We do not need outside enemies to destroy us, We have sufficient enemies within the Society. Oh Allah Protect all innocents human beings from Insane people. Guide us to understand your ONENESS , which is more important than all issues ever exists on this earth.
Difference between Hindu Mullah & Muslim Mullah is, Hindu Mullah Makes his People fool (For Ex. Asaram, Ramdev ) . Muslim Mullah makes himself fool in front his people. That is the reason , Islam is reaching every corner of the World. Allah has his own ways to give Hidayah to his creation. Photography is a need of the present time. It is part of conveying real time news. How the Deoband people will abide by their edict will soon be seen.
I hope, There is nothing in the Quran about photography. Deoband maulvi (Mufti) has retrieved exemption for photography for the purpose of identification. On what grounds was that exemption?
One has to be very wise in understanding the Quranic principles. The most important principle is to be loving and peaceful person. Why Deoband Mufti does not issue edicts (Fatwa) on that subject to all their followers? Most of the Jihadi persons in Pakistan and Afghanistan are Deobandis.
In present times, we use the telephone and car and airplane and television and loudspeakers. It was the Deobandi maulvis who had given Fatwa in early 1940’s that use of loudspeaker was Haraam. I am a witness to that.
In Juma prayers (1960), Maulvi Ihtesham ul Haqq Thanavi sahib (in Karachi) used to give his opening speech in Urdu on loudspeakers. Then, during Arabic Khutbah and prayers, the loudspeaker used to be switched off because they considered it an instrument of the Devil.
Nowadays, the maulvi never makes a speech without a loudspeaker. What a change! They are accepting the truth reluctantly, very slowly. Yet these maulvis are a source of much misguidance in the world. All Muslims need to shun these maulvis and come to the right source of knowledge from the guided Imam of the present times.
