PBS has a new series on the life of Muslim Prophet Muhammad with narrator and acclaimed journalist Rageh Omaar. The project also aims to provide a ‘balanced’ narrative of Islam with facts that may not be known to many people, especially Americans.
It is a three part series that focuses on different and very important phases of the Prophet’s life. The first part deals with the Prophet’s birth, the circumstances he faced then and his first marriage to Khadijah. The second part explores the time during which the Prophet after receiving the Holy revelations from God leaves for Mecca in order to escape the atrocities of the opposing tribesmen which eventually leads to an eight-year war and a peace deal. The third and the final part looks into his later life, when the Prophet preaches Islam, introduces Islamic code of conduct and laws known as the Shariah and the concept of holy struggle in Islam known as Jihad.
Although the series has been carefully planned out in line with Islamic traditions and prohibitions, ‘Life of Muhammad’ does not hesitate from discussing the controversies usually associated with the Prophet’s life such as marriage, battles (a form of Jihad) and his policies towards Jews.
The New York Daily News gave four stars in its TV review and concluded:
“’Life of Muhammad’ won’t spark instant conciliation. If it helps with greater understanding, it has done its job.”

I had the pleasure of meeting Rageh Omar at the residence of H.R.H. Prince Charles some years ago. We had an interesting conversation about Iraq…
I watched the series, it will help removing misunderstanding the public had for Islam and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
