Mosque to be built in Reykjavík, Iceland, soon

The Reykjavík environment and planning board has kind of already promised the Association of Muslims in Iceland a building site in Sogamýri in Reykjavík, so they can build a mosque. Chairman of the planning board says they plan to honor that promise. This would be the first mosque in Iceland.

The land in question was approved for this purpose earlier this year. The Muslim Association in Iceland welcomed the decision that they claimed to have waited for for 13 years.

The Muslim Association plans to build a mosque with a nine meter high minaret, but the final design will have to be approved by municipal authorities.

The building site is at a very prominent location in Reykjavík and the mosque could become one of the cities most noticeable landmarks.

Sverrir Agnarsson, head of the Muslim Association in Iceland hopes that the construction can begin next year. Construction costs of the mosque are expected to be around ISK 400 million ($3.2m, €2.5m).

There are two Muslim associations in Iceland. The Muslim Association of Iceland with about 465 members and the Muslim Cultural Centre in Iceland with 305 members.
