Why many French Muslims choose burial abroad

By Hugh Schofield. BBC News, Paris.
Every year thousands of bodies are being repatriated from France to the Maghreb, as Muslim families return their loved ones to the soil of their original home. It is a costly and complicated business, involving flights, consular administrators and specialist funeral providers. It also prompts the question: why not get buried in France?

After all, France is the country where these families are now destined to live. Would it not be a sign of successful integration if France were also where they chose to rest when they died?

The answer to that question has to do with the complexities of national identity in a world of mass migration.

But also with France’s own obsession with secular “republican” values, and its reluctance to give ground – literally – on matters of faith.

  1. The news is self explanatory. All the choices are open for Muslims. They can bury here or abroad. there are sections reserved for Muslim funerals in all big graveyards. There Muslims can bury according to their own traditions. There is one restraint, that in France place for a grave is given on lease. Duration of lease depends upon the amount paid by the relatives. So, the mouth of tax box is supposed to be filled with money after a stipulated time. In Muslim countries body is buried once for all. there is no concept of removing or disgracing a body if tax is not paid. Secondly, the cost of transporting the body back home is less than the cost of burying here if precisely calculated.

  2. How dare you make a comment like this?
In Pakistan, bodies are exhumed for the “CRIME” of being buried in a Muslim Qabristan.

  3. Tere azad bandon ki na yeh dunya na woh dunya. You have to pay for the liberty every where. In Pak asthan we are paying for the liberty of whole mankind. For the liberation of coming generations even.Installments of this payment has started abroad also.
