One aspect that got short shrift in the long report but is, nonetheless, deeply troubling is the charge that “In the premier intelligence institutions, religiosity replaced accountability at the expense of professional competency.”
Pakistan may not technically be a theocracy, but various levels of its government contain people in authority who are marinated in the violent extremist version of Islam that bin Laden promoted. They care far more about their misinterpretation of traditional Islam than they do good government.
Since the country was formed in 1947 through partition from India, its history has been marked by aggression against India and Kashmir and a series of leaders unable to create permanent stability.
The new report demonstrates that plenty of work will be needed to stabilize that dangerous country and provide the kind of competent government the Pakistani people deserve.
I thought that if one is truly religious, then, this makes one accountable, too…?!
