IT IS still not official, but everybody knows Nawaz Sharif is set to become Pakistan’s next prime minister. Foreign leaders have dialled in congratulations. Pakistan’s bigwigs sniffing for jobs queue at his residence in Lahore. Three days ago everyone you met on the street was planning to vote for Imran Khan. Today all proudly explain how they voted for Mr Sharif.
On May 12th a street-sweeping van carefully cleaned the already pristine tarmac leading to Mr Sharif’s rural home, as curious local farmers stared. The next day Mr Sharif, no doubt hoping to placate pesky demands for interviews, invited the foreign press corps to lunch. It was a brave decision.
His home in Raiwind reveals the ultimate in wealthy-politician chic. Even approaching Raiwind means driving through eucalyptus woodland, great clumps of bougainvillea and the odd banana tree. All is watched over by men with guns perched in little green watchtowers reminiscent of guards in a prison camp in a second-world-war film.
“And with that he led journalists to a table groaning with kebabs, assorted curries, piles of biryani and steaming bread. Having cunningly distracted his guests, he slipped through a large set of glass doors, away to a distant wing of his home, to prepare for government”
In the end the reporter of Economist also became victim of delicious food. So is the charisma of political leaders of this astonishing country. Being Pakistani from the depth of my soul, my eyes got wet while reading in which paradise the leader of the country resides relative to ordinary Pakistani for whom to meet both ends has become impossible. How this country or nation can ever develop where you see 180 degrees variation between leader and ordinary citizen.
Previously also this man got two chances but could not complete it. Now is his third chance. But the way he wants to run the affairs there exists remote likely hood for him to govern the nation in current scenario. For the first time the youth of Pakistan has awakened and some of the election results have astonished them. PTI of Imran Khan is determined to create problem for this man because if he continues there will be no change in Pakistan.
Secondly without ensuring absolute justice to each citizen and separation of state from religion no leader of the country can ever put the things on right path. Mr Nawaz is inclined to religious extremism. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Pakistan is on special target of this man and his younger brother. Facilitation to KN (Khatme Nabuwwat) which is anti Ahamdiyya extremist outfit is the hall mark of Sheirf brothers. So with this mind set how he will be able to ensure absolute justice and separation of religion and state.
Currently is joy state for him and his party. However the Nawaz which at least I know, unless changes his complete mind set, will never be able to lead the country in befitting manner. Very soon all will witness it.
