Veil can be worn in some cases to testify in court, Supreme Court rules

The country’s top court says the religious beliefs of veiled sex assault complainants must not trump the constitution’s fair trial guarantee for a defendant to face his accuser.

In a deeply split decision, the Supreme Court of Canada on Thursday said there must be a balancing of rights on a case-by-case basis, and set out factors for where trial judges should allow witnesses to remain veiled.
