England: Alcohol related hospital admissions up by almost 900 a day

Official figures reveal that 1.1 million people in England were admitted to hospital in 2009/10 because of alcohol – a rise of 879 per day compared with five years ago.

Overall there was a 25 per cent increase in the number of people admitted to hospital for reasons caused by drinking, a round-up of existing data showed.

The situation is more severe in some parts of the county than others with 3,114 people being admitted per 100,000 people in Liverpool, compared with 850 per 100,000 on the Isle of Wight.

Last night campaigners blamed the rise of cheap supermarket alcohol for the increase in problem drinking.

  1. Its hypocrisy that use of certain drugs is regarded as a crime whilst drinking alcohol is allowed rather encouraged. Football stars are hired to appear in advertisements to encourage people to buy alcohol at cheaper prices at supermarkets. Drug laws need upgrading, and alcohol needs to be included as a drug if the future generations are to be saved.

    Alcohol is becoming a severe problem for the society, especially in those countries where its use is condoned if not encouraged. This news is an important eye-opener, I hope. With more than a million admissions, if we ignore repeat admissions, it means almost 2% of the population was hospitalized because of this menace.
