Westerwelle warns of Mideast peace problems

Berlin believes unilateral moves – such as declaring Palestinian independence – would be “very counterproductive” to the Middle East peace process, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle warned on Tuesday.

 
Westerwelle, who spoke after talks with Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad in Ramallah, did not specifically refer to Palestinian plans to seek UN recognition and membership in September.

  1. declaring a Palestinian state ‘counter-productive’? What is the alternative? another 50 years of ‘peace process’? No one pushed the Israelis to achieve peace instead of just the ‘process’. No one should now object if the Palestinians take steps of their own. As far as I am concerned I wish them all the best.
