AMMAN – Chanting: “We want to return to Palestine” thousands gathered in the Jordan Valley town of Karameh on Friday to mark the anniversary of the Nakbeh (catastrophe) in 1948 when the state of Israel was created.

Around 5,000 people from across the Kingdom, including refugee camps, villages and cities, took part in the rally, organised by the professional associations in coordination with sports and social clubs.

The rally was held in the town of Karameh, which witnessed a major battle fought by Palestinian fighters and the Jordanian army against advancing Israeli forces.

Activists said they chose the border town to emphasise the strong unity between Jordanians and Palestinian people.

“We did not choose this location for no reason. This is a message to the enemy… We are here to say that no matter how much time passes, and whatever rights are given away, we will not forget,” said Mohammad Ababneh, president of the Jordan Pharmacists Association and head of the Professional Associations Council.

“We did not come here to cry, we came to underscore our right to return to Palestine,” he said in a speech at the start of the rally.
