Current Situation and Human Rights Concerns
Since 2017, the Chinese government has faced widespread international condemnation for its treatment of the Uyghur population in Xinjiang. Council on Foreign Relations
- Mass Detention: Experts and human rights organizations estimate that 1 to 3 million Uyghurs and other Turkic minorities have been held in a network of high-security internment camps. China officially describes these as “vocational training centers” aimed at preventing religious extremism and poverty.
- Genocide Allegations: The United States and several other governments have officially declared China’s actions in Xinjiang as genocide. An independent tribunal in the UK also concluded in 2021 that China had committed genocide through forced birth control and sterilization measures intended to reduce the Uyghur population.
- Surveillance & Repression: Xinjiang has been described as a “high-tech police state”. Uyghurs are subject to intrusive surveillance, including facial recognition, biometric data collection, and mandatory phone tracking apps.
- Cultural Suppression: Reports indicate systematic efforts to dismantle Uyghur identity, including the demolition of mosques, bans on religious practices and dress, and the implementation of forced labor programs.
